Growing up in Ottawa, Ontario, Siobhan McGovern took an early interest in
music. Classically trained in both violin and voice, McGovern's musical passion
took one step forward with her acceptance to Humber College's prestigious Jazz program.
It was here that she was granted the opportunity of training with some of Canada's
leading jazz artists and honed her own distinctive jazz style. Siobhan's talents were recognized
when she was awarded the Thomas Kehoe Memorial Award in 2003 and the Jazz FM 91 Award in 2005.
For the past year Siobhan has been touring overseas performing in 5 star hotels in Thailand and Hong Kong
as well as singing for the Navy troops in Bahrain.
McGovern's vocals are a near-déja vu of the 1950s "cool jazz" era made memorable
by legends Peggy Lee and Nina Simone, though marked by an effervescent purity all
her own. That her voice can effortlessly transform from a sultry, velvety line into
an unguardedly wistful coo is as much a testament to her extensive musical training
as to her emotional intuition. She turns jazz standards into confessionals, infused
with hints of soul, folk and contemporary influences - a jazz revisionist with multi-audience
appeal. | |
